Resources for all Star Trek Fans

Posted by schone on July 18th, 2008

You would think after the announcement of a new Star Trek movie and talks of sequels Paramount would give StarTrek.com some resources to keep chuggin along? Well after Paramount decided it would dismiss the great web masters of StarTrek.com we have seen a once great source of information neglected and left to rot.

I thought it would be good to go over some resources for all the latest and past Trek news that I use and hopefully have you also remove StarTrek.com from your bookmarks.

Will Smith: Please stop ruining Science Fiction!

Posted by schone on July 7th, 2008

So Will Smiths’ new Science Fiction release, Hancock, has been bringing in billions of dollars but I still keep asking myself, is Will Smith a good Science Fiction representative/actor?

Before you go ahead and say “but Will Smith releases are always successful”, I’m not denying that but with his recent sci-fi releases he has started to ruin the genre with his “bust yo aliens ass” or Duke Nukem style. The blame doesn’t solely sit with Smith but also with the writers who write the scripts. Although it seems to me that Will Smith is the only one who can fill the role of these renegade characters who have such insightful quotes.

This post looks at the bad and the good (not many) sci-fi releases from Will Smiths repertoire.

Last week I posted about how Science Fiction has lost it’s originality and just recently I found out about a new collectors edition box set for Star Trek being released, yep you guessed it, an Alternate Reality Box Set collection.

So it had me thinking, how many other Science Fiction releases have also gone down the path of alternate, mirror or parallel universes.

Oh to follow up from my last post here is another very familiar (well I think a blatant rip off) present in one of episodes of the Star Trek: Voyager series.

Has Science Fiction lost its originality?

Posted by schone on May 27th, 2008

As more and more new Science Fiction movies are coming out on high budgets it seems that there is a growing loss in origniality. There are only so many mirror universes you can put up with!

A good example of this is the new Hellboy movie (Hellboy II : The Golden Army). I was pretty impressed with what Hellboy (2004) brought to screen, however after viewing the trailer for Hellboy II (which looks awesome!) some of the creeps look awfully familiar to creeps found in Stargate, Star Wars and Pan’s Labyrinth (examples below).
