Will Smith: Please stop ruining Science Fiction!
Movies, Science Fiction July 7th, 2008
So Will Smiths’ new Science Fiction release, Hancock, has been bringing in billions of dollars but I still keep asking myself, is Will Smith a good Science Fiction representative/actor?
Before you go ahead and say “but Will Smith releases are always successful”, I’m not denying that but with his recent sci-fi releases he has started to ruin the genre with his “bust yo aliens ass” or Duke Nukem style. The blame doesn’t solely sit with Smith but also with the writers who write the scripts. Although it seems to me that Will Smith is the only one who can fill the role of these renegade characters who have such insightful quotes.
This post looks at the bad and the good (not many) sci-fi releases from Will Smiths repertoire.
The Bad
Independence Day
Will Smith, a captain in the American Air force runs around saving the day and human kind by smoking cigarettes, king hitting aliens and flying around in an alien spaceship.
This quote sums up how much off a joke this movie was :
Who’s the man? Huh? Who’s the man? Wait till I get another plane! I’m a line ya friends up right beside you! Where ya at, huh? Where ya at? [Hiller opens the spaceship, the alien screams, Hiller smacks him in the head]
i, Robot
Stereotypical Science Fiction movie about robots and how they start developing feelings blah blah blah blah. Will Smith is a typical Hollywood wearing detective who hates technology and robots but of course has a robot arm himself. He is out to prove that robots are thinking for themselves and are a definite threat to human kind if he doesn’t start blowing up shit.
Typical race jokes and Science Fiction just don’t mix:
[to Dr. Lanning's cat] Look, I understand you have experienced a loss, but this relationship just can’t work. I mean, you’re a cat. I’m black. I’m not going to be hurt again.
I Am Legend

A poor re-make of the book “I Am Legend” and the third movie in it’s remake history where Will Smith develops a virus which he now needs to develop a cure for and decides to destroy himself (which was completly unnessecary) to save the cure and human kind.
Eat your vegetables. Don’t just push ‘em around, eat ‘em. I ain’t playin’!
Hancock
I haven’t seen this movie yet and I don’t think I will unless I get a free ticket to its release, but from the reviews it looks as if a dysfunctional and attitude ridden super hero has to conform to the norm and yes, save human kind again.
Hmmm yes:
You know what? You should sue McDonalds, cuz they fucked you up!
The Good
Men in Black I and II
It hasn’t been all bad for Will Smith, I think he did a great job in both Men in Black releases which is an action pack, CGI filled and comedic look on a secret agency who protect and serve aliens and earth.
Post your thoughts or examples of other actors joining the queue.
Enjoy!
