A lot of people have been trying to download a copy of Windows Home Server 2008 but (like myself) could only find the 120 day trial available by ordering the CD to be delivered via snail mail. So here is how you can download an evaluation copy and avoid the wait!

Firstly, you will need a Windows Live ID, you can register for free by clicking here and clicking on one of the Getting Started links, you can sign up with a new email address or use an existing one.

Once you have gotten your Windows Live ID, visit the Microsoft Connect website and click on the Sign in link found in the top right hand corner.

Enter your Windows Live E-mail address and Password, then click the Sign in button.

Once you have logged in, click on the Connection Directory link found at the top of the page.

Then click on the Servers link found under the Connection Directory heading on the left hand side.

A list of available server related products will appear on the right, scroll down until you find the WINDOWS HOME SERVER link, and click on the Add to Your Dashboard link below it.

Once you have done that the Add to Your Dashboard link should change to On Your Dashboard, now click on the Your Dashboard link found at the top of the page.

You should now be on the Your Dashboard section, under the Activity In All Connections Since Your Last Login area you should now see a WINDOWS HOME SERVER link, click on this link.

From here on it is fairly self explanatory; on the left you will see various links, click on the Download link to get the necessary files (make sure you get the release which includes Power Pack 1) and then click on the Product Keys link to get an evaluation key for your download.

Done! No more snail mail!

Enjoy!
