SATA HDD Multi-Function Dock

Posted by Andrew Cetinick on May 30th, 2008

Looking for a multi-function dock? I literally mean multi. The SATA HDD Multi-function dock from usb.brando.com.hk allows any type of SATA drive (2.5” or 3.5”) to be connected to your computer via USB and even ESATA! The dock supports most types of memory cards, and supports PC/Mac. For $79 USB (inc shipping) I reckon its a great device for backing up.

Java WYSIWYG editor using SWT

Posted by Victor Cetinick on May 29th, 2008

In all my travels across the world wide web, I have not encountered an elegant solution to an issue that I would have thought been a simple one. How can I embed a HTML ‘What You See Is What You Get’ (WYSIWYG) editor into a Java application. All the nice free HTML WYSIWYG editors, tend to use javascript and load from a webpage, such as TinyMCE and FCKEditor. This works fine for the J2EE world but application developers are left stranded. So after some research I decided that I would try using the SWT Browser Widget to render a TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor.

Making charts look good in Excel 2003

Posted by schone on May 29th, 2008

Everytime I open up or view a report which still has the default Excel 2003 chart formatting visible I cringe, the grey and off blue colours just make me dry reach.

The whole point of charting is to represent data in a consumable medium, so to go against the grain of ugly Excel 2003 charting I’m going to go over some of my do’s and don’ts when it comes to charting in Excel 2003.

F.Y.I : I know Excel 2007 has some great charting options and anti-aliased charts, however I believe this will benefit the users of Excel 2003.

Windows 7 Preview

Posted by Andrew Cetinick on May 28th, 2008

Yesterday Microsoft reveled their new Windows at the WSJ’s All Things Digital conference, codenamed “Windows 7″. Engadget posted live from the event. Announced for 2009, the big question is Is Vista to blame? Vista took 5.5 years to develop and it was a complete failure. This question was asked to Ballmer at the conference and he responded “It’s not a failure, it’s not a mistake. Are there things we’ll modify and improve going forward? Sure.”.

Looking at the preview released (below) of Windows 7, I can’t see anything that revolutionary that I haven’t seen before. Microsoft have to come up with something amazing to make users ditch Windows XP and spend the extra money for the new version of Windows. They need bring something new to its users like the promised WinFS which was supposed to be included with Windows Vista.

Has Science Fiction lost its originality?

Posted by schone on May 27th, 2008

As more and more new Science Fiction movies are coming out on high budgets it seems that there is a growing loss in origniality. There are only so many mirror universes you can put up with!

A good example of this is the new Hellboy movie (Hellboy II : The Golden Army). I was pretty impressed with what Hellboy (2004) brought to screen, however after viewing the trailer for Hellboy II (which looks awesome!) some of the creeps look awfully familiar to creeps found in Stargate, Star Wars and Pan’s Labyrinth (examples below).

Age of Conan Review

Posted by Andrew Cetinick on May 26th, 2008

I got my copy of Age of Conan on Friday and I couldn’t wait to install and play it. After playing it most of the weekend I thought I would share my impressions of the game. I only have my 2.2 Ghz Macbook Pro to play it on, so I was worried about performance of the game. It was playable but I really do need a new computer to appreciate the graphics of this game.

Age of Conan Released

Posted by Andrew Cetinick on May 23rd, 2008

Age of Conan is finally released after a few delays to the released date, and I am very excited to get my hands on this game. Many source claim this game to be the next big MMORPG in gaming. It caters for a ‘mature’ audience and has many features over other MMORPG’s. Features such as mounted combat, siege warfare, player cities, and the new combat system are just some of the really cool features of AOC. A couple of videos (Part 1 , Part 2) at mmorpg.com, really show off some of the cool combat system features.

The game has completely sold out of collectors editions selling 111,000 copies, and seems so popular they shipped 700,000 copies on launch day. This game is becoming huge quickly!

I getting my copy today and will post my thoughts of it on the weekend.
